E15: Good For Corn Farmers, Confusing For The Rest Of Us

EPA is announcing today that they are ready to approve E15 (15% ethanol) gasoline blends, but only for 2007 model year and newer vehicles.

That's silly.

Are gas station owners really going to set aside one or two pumps for E15, and label them?   Consumers would then be faced with 5 types of gasoline choose from: base, mid-grade, premium, E85, and E15.  Some people will be confused and put E15 in pre 2007 vehicles.  Others will be confused and shun E15.

EPA should have waited to see if E15 was good for all "modern" vehicles, and then switched E10 to E15, since they are apparently required to enrich the corn farmers and ethanol refiners.

People running E15 should expect to see a small degradation in fuel economy.  Since ethanol is about 25% less energy rich than gasoline, switching from E10 to E15 should look like a 1.3% fuel economy reduction, or about 0.4 mpg in a car that averages 27 mpg.  Switching from E0 to E15 will cost about 3.8%, or about 1 mpg.

Fiat launches revised Fiat Panda & Fiorino for 2011 (EU)

Fiat has altered the engines in the 2011 Panda and Fiorino to meet forthcoming Euro5 emissions regulations.

The Panda now comes with revised engines and new exterior & interior colours. All engines have been improved, with the 1.3 litre Multijet 16v 75bhp now available with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) as standard. Mated to a 5 speed manual transmission, combined fuel economy now stands at 67.2mpg (4.2l/100km) with CO2 emissions of 109g/km.

The entry-level 1.2 litre 8v 69bhp petrol engine now emits less carbon dioxide, 113g/km, and improves fuel economy to 65.6mpg (4.9l/100km).

Two new interior finishes are offered; grey/blue and grey/white. Externally, Flying Blue and Green Eccentric have been added to the existing range.

The Fiorino has also received engine updates. The 1.3 Multijet engine now produces 95bhp, up from 75bhp, and 200Nm of torque, while emitting 113g/km and combining 57.6mpg (4.3l/100km). This is due to the standard stop/start and second-generation diesel particulate filter (DPF). Cruise control is also standard. This gives the 1.3 Multijet a range of 652 miles (1,050km).

On the petrol front, a dual-fuel 1.4 Natural Power petrol/methane engine with 70bhp emits 114g/km with a methane driving range of 195 miles (314km).

New interior finishes will be fitted for the 2011 Fiorino. Options will include Blue&Me, 15” alloy wheels, electrically adjustable/heated door mirrors, air conditioning, Off Road Package (shown above), power outlet in luggage compartment and metallic paint.

Prices start at £9,950 (€11,300).

Peugeot has created an all-new electric sports car bearing the alphanumeric appellation EX1, which it will show at the upcoming 2010 Paris Motor Show. This car and the images are real. The 100% electric sports car Peugeot’s latest concept car is a visually striking two-seater roadster with a futuristic styling and an original architecture, designed to offer intense driving sensations as a celebration of the Marque’s 200th anniversary.
The electric motor is a potential source of new driving sensations thanks to its exceptional acceleration capabilities, but also because it is silent in operation and makes the car very easy to drive (no need for a gearbox). On the EX1 sports car concept, two electric motors are used, one on each axle, each with a peak output of 125 kW (250 kW / 340 bhp in total), and an immediately available constant maximum torque of 240 Nm at the front and rear.
The 2011 Peugeot EX1 Concept Is An Electric Sport Cars Concept The "Extreme Dream Car" benefits from characteristics that give it a high enough level of performance not only to leave behind the city centre, the preferred territory of electric vehicles, but also to challenge acceleration records. Its lightness, weight distribution and aerodynamics, the torque and power of its two electric motors and its high-output lithium-ion battery are just some of the characteristics that make this a car capable of lightning acceleration: the latter can exceed 1G of gravitational force.

Indeed the EX1 sports car concept has already broken the following international records (approved by the International Automobile Federation) for an electric-powered terrestrial vehicle. This series of records was established, by Nicolas Vanier, the famous French explorer and film-maker ("The Last Trapper", "Wolf") who drove the EX1 concept car.
Between now and the end of the year, China, the world's largest car market, will be the setting for the EX1 sports car to pursues other world records.
